FAIRFIELD COURT elementary school - RICHMOND, VA
february 29, 2016
On behalf of the staff at Fairfield Court Elementary School, Mrs. Ingrid Higgins, a well-respected first-grade teacher there, invited Elizabeth Johnson Rice to be their guest speaker during February’s Black History Month this year. On Monday, February 29, 2016, Mrs. Rice spoke to various classes to recognize the celebratory month. Students had done much research on civil rights in their classes prior to this date. As Mrs. Rice entered the school, the students greeted her like a celebrity having studied videos and articles written about her.
She first spoke to a third-grade class gathered in the library under the guidance of the librarian, Ms. Theresa Crawley. They were excited and attentive as they listened with great interest. After an hour, she spoke to a mixed group of first, third, and fourth graders who were expecting her in the cafeteria. This group was led by Mrs. Higgins and her co-teacher Mrs. Marilyn Edwards. After a great exchange of questions and answers wtih these exceptional students, she was treated to speeches by two young ladies who were recent winners in an oratorical contest representing the school. The vice principal, Ms. Ellena Ebanks, had kind words of appreciation for her participation. Upon Mrs. Rice’s departure, she was presented with a beautiful fruit basket. She thanked everyone for inviting her and told them she would try to see them again next year.
